A Journey into Strength Training for Cyclists

Meet Alison, the cycling enthusiast ready to elevate her biking game by incorporating the power of strength training. 🚴‍♀️

Alison is passionate about cycling, conquering challenging trails, and pushing her limits on the road. However, she realised that to truly enhance her cycling performance, she needed to embrace strength exercises.

Strength training isn’t just for bodybuilders; it’s a game-changer for so many including cyclists.

Alison recognised that building muscle could lead to increased power, endurance, and overall cycling efficiency. So, she decided to embark on a new journey, integrating strength exercises into her weekly training routine.

Alison started with compound movements like squats and lunges, targeting key muscle groups such as quads, hamstrings, and glutes. This not only improves her pedal strokes but also helps in preventing injuries by creating a strong foundation.

To address the demands of cycling, Alison incorporated exercises focusing on core stability. A strong core not only aids in maintaining proper posture during rides but also enhances overall body control.

She also introduced resistance training to boost her upper body strength. This may seem unconventional for cyclists, but a well-balanced physique contributes to improved bike handling and reduced fatigue.

Alison’s commitment to strength training goes beyond the klub. She includes flexibility exercises to maintain a full range of motion, helping prevent stiffness and discomfort during long rides.

To all fellow cyclists out there, take a cue from Alison and consider adding strength training to your routine. It’s not about bulking up but about building a body that works synergistically to conquer every cycling challenge that comes your way. Pedal stronger, ride longer, and embrace the road with newfound vigor! 🚴‍♀️💨 🍏

Changes to timetable

Pilates has changed to a 5pm start on a Wednesday night. This was to ensure our lovely Jacqui was getting the best work life balance. Kettlebox and Circuits will follow after.

Why Pilates ?

This class was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, has gained immense popularity for its numerous health benefits and holistic approach to fitness.

Here are some reasons why Pilates is considered important:

Core Strength and Stability:Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles, including the abdominals, lower back, hips, and buttocks. A strong core enhances stability, improves posture, and reduces the risk of injury in daily activities and sports.

Improved Flexibility: Pilates exercises emphasize lengthening and stretching muscles, which promotes flexibility and joint mobility. Increased flexibility can enhance range of motion, alleviate muscle tension, and reduce the risk of strains and sprains.

Better Posture: Pilates encourages proper alignment and body awareness, helping individuals develop better posture both during exercise and in everyday life. Improved posture reduces stress on the spine, alleviates back and neck pain, and enhances overall body alignment.

Muscle Tone and Definition: Pilates targets multiple muscle groups simultaneously, resulting in lean muscle development and improved muscle tone. Regular practice can sculpt and define muscles without adding bulk, creating a longer, leaner physique.

Balance and Coordination: Pilates exercises promote balance, coordination, and proprioception (the body’s awareness of its position in space). Enhanced balance and coordination contribute to better motor skills, agility, and functional movement patterns.

Injury Rehabilitation and Prevention: Pilates is widely used in physical therapy settings for injury rehabilitation and prevention. Its low-impact nature and focus on controlled movements make it suitable for individuals recovering from injuries or managing chronic conditions.

Mind-Body Connection: Pilates emphasizes mindfulness, concentration, and breath awareness throughout each movement. By connecting the mind and body, practitioners develop a deeper understanding of their physical capabilities, improve mental focus, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Versatility and Accessibility:Pilates exercises can be modified to accommodate individuals of all fitness levels, ages, and abilities. Whether performed on a mat or specialized equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, or Chair, Pilates offers a versatile and adaptable workout experience.

In conclusion, Pilates offers a holistic approach to fitness that addresses core strength, flexibility, posture, balance, and overall well-being. Its principles can benefit individuals seeking improved physical health, injury rehabilitation, stress relief, and enhanced body awareness. Incorporating Pilates into your fitness routine can lead to long-term health benefits and a stronger, more resilient body.
